Government Expands National ID Services to Hulhumale’ and Villimale’

The Maldivian government has taken a significant step to improve accessibility for its citizens by expanding National ID Card issuance services to Hulhumale’ and Villimale’. This move underscores the administration's commitment to ensuring essential services are available to all residents conveniently.

The initiative, part of a broader push to streamline ID card and passport services nationwide, was officially inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on November 16.

New Locations for ID Card Issuance

As of now, citizens in Hulhumale’ and Villimale’ can obtain their ID cards from the following newly established service centers:

  • Hulhumale’ Phase 1: Umar Zahir Building, Ground Floor
  • Hulhumale’ Phase 2: Vinares Tower 2, First Floor
  • Villimale’: E Block, Ground Floor

Additionally, to ensure citizens in other parts of the Maldives have equal access, the government has set up 174 collection centers across the country. These centers serve as designated points for collecting processed ID cards, further enhancing accessibility for those living outside the capital region.

The government has been progressively modernizing its ID card issuance process over the past few years.

  • In 2021, the service was launched online, enabling citizens to apply for ID cards digitally—a crucial step taken during the COVID-19 pandemic to minimize in-person interactions.
  • In 2022, the system was upgraded with the DNR Online Portal, which allowed seamless digital applications and processing. Once ID cards are printed, they are sent to the respective island councils for easy distribution to applicants.

These digital advancements have not only reduced paperwork but also made the process more efficient, saving time for both citizens and administrative staff.

Future Plans for Nationwide Coverage

The government’s vision for the National ID Card service extends well beyond Hulhumale’ and Villimale’. By 2025, the aim is to establish ID card issuance services on every inhabited island. This ambitious goal ensures that no citizen—regardless of where they live—faces barriers to obtaining vital identification documents.

Such expansion aligns with the government’s broader efforts to decentralize essential services and bring them closer to the people.
