Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed recently called upon Umrah agents to provide affordable Umrah packages, making the pilgrimage more accessible to the people of the Maldives. This appeal was made during the opening of the Hajj Umrah Conference at the Islamic Ministry, where Dr. Shaheem emphasized the importance of reforming how Umrah trips are organized.
A Call for Change in Umrah Offerings
During his address, Dr. Shaheem pointed out the need for a systemic change in the structure of Umrah trips. Currently, these trips are mainly offered during specific times of the year, particularly during Ramadan and in January and February. The Minister proposed that Umrah trips should be available year-round, enabling individuals to perform the pilgrimage whenever it suits them. "Currently, there is Ramadan Umrah, then January and February Umrah. A systemic change needs to be brought. That is, allow Umrah trips to be made at any time," he stated.
This flexibility would not only accommodate a larger number of Maldivians but also ensure that those who wish to embark on the pilgrimage can do so without being constrained by time.
Addressing Accommodation Costs
One of the significant challenges facing potential pilgrims is the high cost of accommodation in Mecca and Medina. Dr. Shaheem attributed the steep prices of Umrah packages to the location of hotels near the Grand Mosque. He suggested that by booking hotels farther away, travellers could significantly reduce their overall costs. This change could lead to more affordable travel packages and ultimately increase participation in the pilgrimage.
Dr Shaheem noted that many Maldivians struggle to afford the current Umrah packages, which typically range from MVR 28,000 to MVR 37,000. To address this issue, he proposed offering packages priced between MVR 15,000 and MVR 20,000, making the pilgrimage more financially accessible for a broader audience.
Special Packages for Specific Groups
In addition to lowering package prices, Dr. Shaheem emphasized the importance of introducing special rates for specific groups. This includes youth, parents, and students, who may face unique financial challenges. By offering targeted packages, the Ministry aims to encourage more individuals from these groups to partake in the Umrah pilgrimage.
Dr. Shaheem also highlighted the benefits of opting for more economical accommodations, such as those located in Al Aziziyah. He explained that energetic youth would find it easy to attend the five daily prayers using bus transport, carrying their backpacks with ease. "All the prayers can be offered at the Grand Mosque," he remarked, suggesting that with some adjustments, fulfilling religious obligations during Umrah can be both manageable and rewarding.
