Velaa Private Island is currently seeking a Coral Restoration Intern to join its team. This exciting opportunity will give you hands-on experience in marine conservation and coral restoration while working alongside our expert marine biology team. The successful candidate will assist in the resort’s ongoing efforts to protect and restore coral reefs, contributing to the overall health of the marine ecosystem in the Maldives.


General Responsibilities

As a Coral Restoration Intern, your role will be vital in the success of Velaa Private Island’s coral restoration projects. Your daily tasks will include a range of duties designed to improve the health of coral reefs and contribute to the sustainability of the resort's marine ecosystem.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Data Collection and Entry: You will assist in gathering essential data on the coral restoration efforts, including documenting the health of coral nurseries and transplanting coral colonies to the reef. You will record and analyze data from various scientific surveys to ensure that the coral restoration initiatives are progressing effectively.

  • Coral Restoration Project Duties: You will help construct, monitor, and maintain multiple coral nurseries and Biorock structures. These structures play a crucial role in promoting coral growth and restoration. Your work will include transplanting coral colonies from nurseries to the reef and conducting scientific surveys to track progress.

  • Assisting the Marine Biologist & Sustainability Manager: You will work closely with the resort’s Marine Biologist and Sustainability Manager in carrying out various activities at the marine center. This includes assisting in educational programs, such as the Young Marine Biologist Program with the Kids Club, where you will engage with young guests and teach them about marine conservation.

  • Manage Small Personal Coral Restoration Projects: You will be entrusted with managing small-scale coral restoration projects under the guidance of the Marine Biologist. This will give you the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in coral restoration in real-world settings.

  • Reporting: You will report directly to the Resident Marine Biologist and the Coral Biologist, ensuring that all activities are documented and tracked effectively.


Skill Requirements

To be successful in this role, candidates must have a deep passion for marine conservation and an understanding of coral biology. You should be comfortable working in both independent and team environments and possess excellent communication and organizational skills.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Rescue Diver Certification: You must be a certified Rescue Diver with at least 100 logged dives. This qualification ensures you have the experience necessary for working safely in the marine environment.

  • Degree in Marine Biology or Related Field: A degree in marine biology or a related field is essential for understanding the scientific aspects of coral restoration and marine conservation.

  • Experience in Coral Restoration (Preferred): Previous experience in coral restoration projects will be an advantage, though it is not a requirement. A passion for marine life and an eagerness to learn will also be highly valued.

  • Knowledge of Marine Biology: You should have strong knowledge of marine biology, particularly corals and coral restoration techniques. Understanding the marine environment is crucial for carrying out the project successfully.

  • Communication Skills: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is required. You should be able to effectively communicate your findings and ideas to team members and guests alike.
