The Maldives has set a new milestone in its tourism industry, welcoming 2 million visitors for the first time in a single year. This achievement marks a significant moment for the island nation, which has long been celebrated as one of the world’s top travel destinations.

A Grand Celebration at Velana International Airport

To honor the historic arrival, a special ceremony took place at Velana International Airport. The 2 millionth tourist, an Australian woman traveling with her husband and two children, was warmly received by officials and local representatives.

The family was awarded a six-day stay at Saii Lagoon Maldives, along with gifts presented by key organizations, including the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Maldives Immigration, and Maldives Customs Service.

The event saw the participation of several prominent figures, including Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal, MMPRC Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree, and MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed. Senior officials from Maldives Immigration and Maldives Customs Service also attended.

Adding a cultural touch to the ceremony, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) SIFCO group performed a traditional act, making the occasion even more memorable.

Maldives’ Tourism Journey

Last year, the Maldives recorded 1.74 million tourist arrivals. Building on this success, the government set an ambitious target of 2 million visitors for 2024. Through strategic promotions, collaborations, and enhanced services, the goal was achieved, solidifying the Maldives' reputation as a premier travel destination.

Future Targets for Tourism Growth

Looking ahead, the Maldives aims to surpass this year’s achievements. The new terminal at Velana International Airport, set to be completed next year, is expected to further boost capacity. The government has set its sights on welcoming 2.2 million tourists by 2025, ensuring the Maldives continues to thrive as a global hotspot for travelers.

Known for its crystal-clear waters, luxurious resorts, and unique marine life, the Maldives remains a favorite for travelers seeking relaxation and adventure. With this milestone, the country has reaffirmed its position as a top choice for global tourists.

This historic achievement reflects the Maldives’ commitment to excellence in tourism. As the country prepares for even greater milestones in the coming years, its natural beauty and dedication to hospitality will undoubtedly keep it on the map as a leading destination.

Whether you’re planning a family vacation, a romantic getaway, or an adventurous escape, the Maldives continues to offer an unforgettable experience
