Police Announce Strict Enforcement of Nationwide Vaping Ban

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced firm measures to enforce the newly amended Tobacco Control Act, which prohibits the use, sale, and distribution of vaping devices and products across the country. This ban, effective from December 15, aims to create a healthier environment by reducing the risks associated with electronic smoking devices.

New Rules and Penalties

Under the revised legislation, individuals caught using vaping devices in public spaces will face fines, with notifications sent via text messages. The fines will detail payment procedures and include a link to the convenient 'Vaaru Pay' system.

Selling or giving away electronic cigarettes or related products also carries heavy penalties. Sellers can be fined approximately USD 1,297, with an additional USD 648 per item sold. Those providing these items for free will face a penalty of around USD 648, while stricter fines of up to USD 3,243 are reserved for cases involving sales or giveaways to minors.

Additionally, the import of vaping devices is strictly prohibited, with fines starting at approximately USD 3,243 and increasing by USD 648 for each individual product imported.

Community Involvement in Enforcement

The police have urged citizens to cooperate with the enforcement efforts by refraining from vaping and supporting the ban. To ensure public spaces remain smoke-free, the MPS has encouraged individuals to report any instances of vaping through hotlines 119 and 911 or local police contact numbers.

Speaking on the enforcement protocol, Sub-inspector of Police Nizam Mohamed explained that officers would respond to reports of public vaping promptly. Police Inspector Aminath Nishana added that detailed guidelines have been drafted to ensure consistent enforcement across all islands, including those without local police stations, where health officials will support enforcement efforts.

The Maldives' decision to ban vaping aligns with global concerns about the health risks posed by electronic cigarettes. Research has linked vaping to various respiratory issues and long-term health complications, leading many countries to introduce strict regulations. By implementing this ban, the Maldives aims to curb the use of vaping products and promote a healthier lifestyle for its citizens.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to reduce tobacco consumption and the health burdens associated with smoking-related illnesses. Authorities hope that the ban will discourage the use of harmful products, particularly among young people, who are often the target of vaping marketing campaigns.

As the vaping ban takes effect, the MPS is focusing on raising awareness about the new rules and ensuring compliance across the country. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed about the penalties and avoid any activities that could lead to fines.

This nationwide effort represents a significant step toward reducing tobacco use and safeguarding public health in the Maldives. With clear enforcement measures in place, the authorities are working to ensure a smooth transition to a smoke-free environment for all.

By understanding the rules and penalties, both residents and visitors can contribute to this important health initiative while avoiding unnecessary fines
