Marine Science Now Offered at A Level in Maldives for the First Time

For the first time in the Maldives, Marine Science is being offered at the A Level, marking a significant milestone in the country’s educational landscape. The Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) officially launched the subject in September last year, and the institution celebrated this achievement with a special ceremony held yesterday. CHSE is currently the only educational institution in the Maldives that provides Marine Science as part of the A Level curriculum.

Inaugural Event and Support from Experts

The ceremony was inaugurated by Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauhary, a distinguished Marine Biologist from the Maldives Marine Research Institute. His participation highlighted the importance of this subject in fostering a deeper understanding of the country’s rich marine biodiversity and the environmental challenges it faces. The introduction of Marine Science at A Level will equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to address these issues in the future, contributing to the sustainable development of the Maldives’ marine resources.

Growing Interest in Marine Science

As of now, 14 students have enrolled in Marine Science at CHSE, with seven additional students studying at the institution’s Hulhumale' campus. The growing interest in this field demonstrates the increasing awareness among young people about the value of marine conservation and sustainable fisheries management. It is expected that the number of students pursuing this subject will rise as awareness spreads about the potential career opportunities in marine science and related fields.

A Rich History of Fisheries Education

The introduction of Marine Science at A Level comes 40 years after Fisheries Science was first taught in the Maldives. Fisheries Science made its debut in 1984, offered initially at Majeedhiyya School and Aminiya School. The first O Level examination for Fisheries Science was held in 1987, marking the beginning of the Maldives' educational journey in marine and fisheries studies. Over the years, Fisheries Science has paved the way for the development of other marine-related subjects, such as Marine Biology, which are now integral to the education system.

In addition to Marine Science, CHSE offers a variety of subjects that cater to different interests and career paths. These include Marine Biology, Travel and Tourism, Psychology, and Computer Science. The school’s diverse curriculum ensures that students are well-prepared for a range of professional fields, from environmental conservation and tourism to technology and social sciences. This broad range of academic options empowers students to make informed choices about their future careers and pursue their passions.

The Future of Marine Science Education in the Maldives

With the Maldives being an island nation surrounded by rich marine ecosystems, the introduction of Marine Science at A Level is a crucial step toward building a knowledgeable and skilled workforce capable of addressing the challenges of climate change, overfishing, and marine pollution. The subject’s inclusion in the national curriculum not only highlights the importance of the marine environment but also opens up new avenues for students interested in pursuing careers in marine research, conservation, and policy-making.

As the demand for marine experts continues to grow globally, the Maldives’ focus on Marine Science education will play a vital role in ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of environmental sustainability in the region.

This new academic offering is just the beginning of an exciting future for the Maldives' education system, one that is focused on nurturing the next generation of marine scientists and conservationists.
