The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has reported promising results from recent traffic safety improvements in Hulhumale’, where the introduction of roundabouts has led to fewer accidents. However, HDC officials emphasize that public education is vital for the full potential of these measures to be realized.
New Roundabouts Improve Safety in Busy Intersections
Speaking on State media, Ahmed Sofwan, HDC’s Assistant Director of Transport, Planning, and Design, explained that roundabouts were introduced at Hulhumale’s most heavily trafficked intersections after studies showed their ability to lower accident rates. These intersections, previously prone to frequent accidents, were selected based on their high-risk status. Sofwan highlighted that traffic flow has improved notably since the installation, reducing wait times for vehicles during peak hours.
Sofwan also shared that HDC worked closely with the Maldives Police Service to monitor the roundabouts during initial trials. Adjustments were made based on real-time observations to ensure roundabouts could be navigated efficiently by emergency vehicles. “The feedback from the trials has been positive, and safety measures were fine-tuned after consultations with the Police,” Sofwan stated.
Public Awareness Key to Success
While the roundabouts have positively impacted accident rates, HDC and police officials underscore that greater public awareness is crucial to achieving the full safety benefits. According to Inspector Ismail Rafeeu, who spoke about the impact on local traffic patterns, many drivers are still unfamiliar with roundabout navigation rules, leading to minor incidents.
“Accidents have decreased significantly at major intersections, which is encouraging,” Inspector Rafeeu explained. “However, we’re seeing more minor accidents in smaller lanes as some drivers attempt to avoid the roundabouts during busy hours.”
To address this, HDC is planning an awareness campaign to educate drivers on roundabout etiquette and proper navigation. This initiative aims to reduce confusion, improve adherence to traffic rules, and further decrease accident rates across Hulhumale’.
Reducing Traffic Congestion with Roundabouts
One of the primary benefits of Hulhumale’s roundabouts has been improved traffic flow. Traditional intersections often cause congestion due to lengthy waiting times at traffic lights, especially during rush hours. Roundabouts, on the other hand, allow for continuous vehicle movement and are generally safer when drivers yield properly to other vehicles.
HDC noted that each roundabout has been strategically placed in areas prone to traffic build-up. "We installed roundabouts at 11 key intersections, to complete all planned installations by the end of the year," Sofwan confirmed. These measures are intended to streamline traffic and make intersections safer for all road users, especially pedestrians.
Future Plans for Traffic Safety in Hulhumale’
With the positive initial results, HDC has committed to enhancing Hulhumale’s road safety measures and has plans to implement more pedestrian-friendly features. The Housing Development Corporation is also looking to collaborate further with local agencies to develop educational programs aimed at promoting road safety and accident prevention.
